Planting spring bulbs and Creating potted colour for winter

Published on 26 May 2026 at 4:58 pm

I'm abit late to the party on planting my spring bulbs this year and hate to admit that it's the 26th of May... the month is nearly over and my Iris and Fresisa bulbs are still in the box they came in waiting for me to have a spare moment to plant them.

When I do plant these bulbs which for the bulbs sake will hopefully be by the end of the month as I'm cutting it fine but hoping they will still flower come spring and I plan on creating a nice display pairing them with pansies and polyanthus in the black display pots I have placed on our front deck.

These bulbs are very lucky this year as I have finally dumped out the old potting mix in these pots that wasn't draining well anymore and going for a complete fresh potting mix approach.

I also would recommend when planting bulbs; using bulb food or fertilizer when planting bulbs just gives them that extra boost they need when they need it from a slow release fertilizer and helps in the first and second year flowering to get the most out of your bulbs.

Enjoy my quick concept sketch below.
